The Highlights and Lowlights of 2016

Hello, travel lovers! I hope 2016 has provided you with many wonderful travel opportunities. We were supposed to be able to take a real, week long vacation somewhere, but that didn’t happen due to real life punching us in the wallet! Even with the lowlights, there were many highlights, too!

Even with the financial setbacks, we did manage to take a few roadtrips:

  • Tomahawk, Wisconsin
  • Newport, Kentucky
  • Vermilion, Ohio
  • Cincinnati, Ohio

Bigger plans had to be scrapped this year, due to some unforeseen circumstances. Those money suckers started four days after I started the blog. Talk about great timing (sarcasm).

But first, the highlights!

We took a 12 hour road trip to go to a family wedding. It went so well that I thought we were pros at traveling. Of course, I was knocked down a peg when our two hour (give or take) trip to Vermilion, Ohio wasn’t quite as smooth. While Vermilion wasn’t quite as easy, the kids loved swimming in Lake Erie! They slept so well during this trip, too. Finally, we had a really successful trip to Newport Aquarium in Kentucky and Kings Island amusement park in Mason (Cincinnati), Ohio.

The lowlights

This year felt like we had lowlights one after another. We struggled with house and pet expenses. One of my cats died and the older one was really sick. Things were breaking (air conditioning was at the to of the list), real estate stuff was sucking the life out of us and it felt like it was never going to end.

“This too shall pass” is my current mantra. The thing keeping us grounded will eventually stop being an obstacle. Right? Quick update: the real estate woes didn’t end until March, 2017.

Blissmersion pushed me to travel

Blissmersion is my creative outlet and has brought so much joy to my life in 2016. I hope to continue to grow in 2017. It took a long time to realize that travel is the thing that’s missing from life. Blogging about travel had ensured that I do more than merely dream about travel. I actually make plans to travel!

In the past few months that I’ve been unable to take those epic journeys, this blog has encouraged me to get out of the rut more often. We have visited 8 new (to us) nature parks, the art museum, Kings Island amusement park, Newport Aquarium, Marmon Valley Farm, a local airport, watched a (way too long) production of the Nutcracker ballet, tried fishing, horseback riding, and done far more wandering than in the past.

In addition, it’s been a blast reliving my past travel experiences, even this one, which was a painful mistake! I highly recommend blogging, if you’re on the fence about it.

While 2016 has been tough financially and somewhat emotionally for us, I am looking forward to 2017! I expect to be able to resume traveling (hopefully before mid-year). Chile and Iceland are on my 2017 wishlist, but I’d say yes to most destinations.

Other Projects

In 2016, I also started a toy channel! It is also a lot of fun. It’s called The Happy Happy Hippo and you can view the videos here. Blissmersion also has a youtube channel and that can be accessed here.

How was your 2016? What are you looking forward to in 2017?
