Oh my god oh my god oh my god kept running through my mind when I heard the news. What have I done? Is it really real now? Are we really moving?

Oh yes, it’s real! It is happening!

The Big Announcement: We Are Going to be Expats in Mexico!

We are moving to Mexico. In less than 2 months, but more on that later! We only had three months notice.

The process has seemed so long and so slow.  Now that I can actually write about it, I don’t even know what to say.  In the past, a potential moving abroad opportunity dissipated into nothing. I didn’t know if that would happen again. This time, it has all worked out and we are moving!  My husband’s company is transferring us there and that will make this move far, far easier than it otherwise would be.

But it’s still scary. So scary.

And exciting.  So very exciting.

I am anxious about leaving our families. We will also be coming back in a few years. The end date actually makes it easier to take the risk and move.

Some where in Mexico. My husband visited recently and provided the pictures.

No, I Don’t Speak Spanish Yet

Never did I dream of moving to Mexico. Even thoughts of moving to France were quickly dismissed when they dared to cross my brain (I took French through college, though I’m not fluent).

Even though we pursued this opportunity and have known about it for several months, nothing was set in stone (obviously, being a work thing, there was an interview process. You can’t assume that it will fall into your lap).

I’ve started going through household items already. I am working on securing foster homes for our pets (leaving them is very difficult) and I’m also looking into whether we can bring our dogs. I am hoping it all goes smoothly!

The Process of Moving

My husband already took a preliminary trip to Mexico. The whole family will take a trip to go house hunting sometime soon. Then, we move. This is all happening in a time frame of three months. All while getting the house ready to sell in the meantime. Yikes!

Life is amazing, really. Sometimes those unexpected curve balls are awesome!

And scary.

Would you ever move to a country you’ve never visited before?

Congrats! Would love to live in Latin America at one point. I’ve lived abroad several times and at first is scary and overwhelming but then you get used to it. I recommend enrolling in language classes as soon as you arrive. That’s how I met some of my closest friends when I moved to Brussels. Hope you have a seamless move!

I’m planning on jumping in as quickly as possible! I’m very nervous about driving there, though. I still can’t wait!

As someone who quit her job to move overseas, I’m all for having an adventure abroad. Being scared means you’re opening yourself up to new experiences. Take it all and enjoy it all!

Thanks! I have so much work to do right now between packing and fixing up the house that those emotions seem to be on hold!

And congratulations on already having done it. Very cool!

Congratulations on the big move! Mexico is awesome, though speaking Spanish will help, but the cool thing is that people there are quite patient with you as stumble over words! This isn’t always the case in every country unfortunately! I’d honestly rather plan an international move than work out how to buy a house, haha! It’s all what you get used to 🙂 have a safe move!!

Thank you! I’m planning on diving in immediately to learn Spanish. I’m working on it only a little right now. We are working on getting our house ready to sell. In my experience, selling a home is far more difficult than buying one. But yes, anything I haven’t done before seems daunting.

Congratulations! You’ll love Mexico, to which part are you moving exactly?… I’m from Mexico City and I like it a lot, there are lots of things to do and it’s pretty americanized, you’ll find malls with everything (from McDonalds to Best Buy, Tommy Hilfiger or Sears) also culture is nice and we love foreign people everyone will try to help you even if they don’t speak English but usually everyone from middle class income up speaks English! Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks, Pilar! We will be close to Queretaro. I’m so excited! On our short visit, it seemed like there will be quite a bit that will be familiar (stores, malls, Home Depot). I do want to learn Spanish, too. It’s nice to know that people will hopefully be patient with my currently poor Spanish language skills.
