Staying safe while traveling (or in everyday life) is a subject I take seriously. When we travel, we often travel with our passports. Leaving them locked in a safe while we are enjoying the sights (or the pool) gives me peace of mind. In most of our travels, a safe has been provided by the hotel. However, when there isn’t one in the room, I always wish I’d brought a portable personal travel safe.

So I know I want one, but what is the best travel safe to buy? Let’s get to the top portable travel safe reviews and start comparing!

Why Travel with a Portable Travel Safe?

The short answer: so you don’t lose your important stuff.

Nowadays, not only do we travel with important identifications that are inconvenient to replace at best, we also travel with expensive cell phones, cameras, laptops, and other gadgets. If you’ve invested a lot of money into these devices, losing them could be devastating (and yet another reason to have travel insurance for every trip).

Being in  foreign country and trying to get your identification replaced at the local embassy is time consuming and can be difficult. Replacing a stolen computer or camera is also expensive. Losing the memories stored on those electronics could even be worse. Keep your memories, stuff, passports, and peace of mind!

There are also numerous videos and articles online about how easy it is to break into a hotel room safe, too. Traveling with a portable travel safe makes sense.

What is the Best Travel Safe?

If you’re looking for the best travel safes, there are many things to consider. Think about how you travel; how often? Mostly for business or mostly for pleasure? Analyzing your choices will help you find the perfect travel safe for you!

Pacsafe Venturesafe EXP45 Anti-Theft Carry-On Travel Backpack

The Pacsafe Venturesafe backpack does double duty as a decent carry on backpack with many anti theft features. It has secure-able, puncture resistant zippers that can be locked with a padlock. The fabric is a lightweight, steel mesh that is cut resistant. It also comes with a stainless steel cable  that can be used to lock the bag to objects with a padlock. Please note that the padlock is NOT included. The 45 liter back can fit a 15″ notebook into the padded laptop sleeve. The roomy main compartment is lockable and there are 2 interior pockets. It also features side pockets big enough for water bottles or an umbrella. The shoulder straps are padded. There is a hip belt and sternum clip, for added comfort (I cannot carry packs without my sternum clips!) It also features water resistant material, made of nylon and polyester. There is also a 65 liter pack available. This is my top choice!

Pacsafe Travelsafe 5L GII Portable Safe

This safe claims to have all of the features I look for in a great travel safe: stainless steel wire mesh that is embedded into the poly canvas fabric to help prevent slashing by would-be thieves, TSA accepted 3-combo lock with a stainless steel cable, handles for easier carrying, and water resistant (this is different than waterproof). The lock that comes with this model is a little flimsy. I recommend replacing it and practicing with it before traveling, just to be on the, um, safe side. Pun totally intended. The size is 12 Liters.

Pacsafe Travelsafe X15-16 Liter Portable Lockbox for Travel (Flat Design)

This bag is huge, more like luggage. One user says it makes a great carry on, because it’s so roomy. The fabric is water resistant.  Be aware that the lock it comes with is too easy to reset , so buy a different lock and key for this bag. It’s a solid option, especially for those carrying large tech (like laptops and cameras). Also, the bottom is rounded just enough that it doesn’t really fold flat there.

FlexSafe by AquaVault

The FlexSafe by AquaVault is the one from Shark Tank. They updated and improved it in 2019 and it’s a lot better. This safe is easy to pack, heavy duty (it has five layer construction) and water resistant (NOT water proof). It’s on the smaller side and only fits documents, phone, and wallet. Please read the instructions carefully. It’s really helpful to watch the company’s videos before using this safe for travel.

Why do I need a portable travel safe?

Portable safes for travel makes sense because you can purchase the safe that works best with your style of travel. You can take it with you wherever you go -eliminating the need to use the hotel safe. Hotel safes are fairly easy to break into. Also, what happens if you forget your special code and your documents are locked inside? Sure, you can find someone to break into the safe, but what if it makes you late for your flight to wait for someone who knows how to open it? Portable travel safes eliminate that worry!

Final Words About Travel Safes

It makes sense to keep your valuables secured when you travel. It can be inconvenient to difficult and expensive to replace electronics and passports. Losing those items could downright ruin your vacation and also  your peace of mind. I’m a fan of travel safes for securing my important documents and electronics.

Go forth, travel, and bring your safe!

Wow nice list.

I don’t trust the hotel safes in Southeast Asia. I use a Pacsafe 15L to put my stuff in and tether it with a bike cable lock. Works great.

I’m glad to hear you love the safe. I’ve read that hotel safes are easy to break into, too, but I haven’t been able to confirm it. Safety first!
