Educational Travel
I fully believe that travel provides an education, even if families don’t do educational specific activities (museums, for example). Even if you do choose to see an historical monument or an archeological site, the hands on learning is so much better than sitting in a classroom. I love places where you can touch history (like when we visited several Mayan sites).
Here are some ideas for a different kind of travel and how these experiences help kids learn, too.
Unschooling
In addition to traveling and living our lives as expats, I love to write about unschooling. I was educated in a very unschooled manner and I fully intend for my children to also live a life without classrooms.
However, Mexico threw me for a big loop! Instead of unschooling or doing any version of homeschooling, I made the radical and difficult decision to send my children to school.
I have mostly made peace with this temporary foray into school for my children. There have been some huge advantages! We’ve made wonderful friends, my children are bilingual, and we are included in the culture. It was difficult to meet people without attending school. I do believe that the advantages currently outweigh the disadvantages.
Though I did write about why I hate back to school time!
Books We Love
We also have discovered some wonderful books that schoolers, unschoolers, and those in between will love!
