While Mexico is a large, diverse country, not everyone will have a chance to thoroughly explore it. Where is the ultimate Mexico destination? I’ve been fortunate to visit so many wonderful destinations in Mexico. Here are my picks for the best places to visit in Mexico with family (and even without!)

Best places to visit in Mexico with family

There are so many vacation spots in Mexico that are appealing for different reasons. The country has so much to offer. From mountains to beaches, Mexico has a little bit of almost everything. If you want to take an awesome Mexico vacation with kids, there are so many options for every kind of traveling family. What are the best places to visit in Mexico with kids?

Places to Go in Mexico

Cozumel

Though the destinations I’m including in this post aren’t in any particular order, Cozumel is at the top of the list for a reason. Cozumel Island is my current favorite destination in Mexico. The beach and ocean were so perfect, we could’ve spent the entire week solely there and not felt that we missed out on anything. However, Cozumel also offers up several interesting places to visit, including the wonderful San Gervasio Mayan Ruins. Another highlight of Cozumel Island is Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park, which has a lot to do for kids and adults alike.

From Cozumel, you can take the ferry across to the mainland, to explore things to do in Playa Del Carmen. A day trip to Chichen Itza is pretty easy to do from Cozumel, too, though it will be a long day for young kids. This is my go-to vacation spot in Mexico because it’s a pretty chill place with beautiful beaches. There’s still plenty to do in Cozumel even if you don’t want to hit up the mainland.

Riviera Maya Mexico

I’ve had the pleasure of visiting several spots along the Riviera Maya in Mexico, including Tulum, Playa Del Carmen,, and Cancun. My preferences are Playa Del Carmen and Tulum, though the whole of coast is gorgeous. Tulum is an excellent place to base yourself for ease of traveling around the region and access to beautiful beaches.

From anywhere along the coast, it’s easy to visit Chichen Itza, Coba Ruins, and the Mayan Ruins of Tulum, which are all wonderful (and quite different) Mayan ruins you can visit while in Mexico.

Cancun and Playa del Carmen have a lot of all-inclusive resorts, which does make traveling with family much easier. For regular  resorts, you’ll find gorgeous places in Tulum and Isla Holbox. There’s something for every kind of traveler in this area. This area and Cozumel are probably the best places in Mexico for kids, if you want something easy and with plenty to do.

La Paz, Baja California Sur

One of the gorgeous beaches in La Paz, Mexico

La Paz ended up being one of my all-time favorite trips. La Paz has mountains and beaches. It’s not the green jungle landscape that you’ll find in the Riviera Maya. However, you’ll still find beautiful beaches, with calm water. La Paz is a lesser known destination, with many international tourists coming in only to hit up Balandra Beach or go on a whale watching tour. That’s maybe why I loved it – it was a town with a decent amount of infrastructure that didn’t feel overrun with tourists. There aren’t any all-inclusive resorts and while there are hotels on small beaches, the most beautiful beaches are free of hotels, homes, and other buildings. It’s unique, in that respect.

Puerto Vallarta

Playa Los Muertos, Puerto Vallarta.

Puerto Vallarta is a destination situated in the state of Jalisco, on the Pacific ocean. This area also has many all-inclusive resorts, regular resorts, and apartment rentals. We’ve done the AI and regular apartment rentals. Both have their advantages.

If you’re renting an apartment or home, you are more likely to need to rent a car so that you can get basic necessities like groceries. Cars will provide more freedom to explore all that the area has to offer, too. From Puerto Vallarta, you can visit rustic and harder-to-get-to places like Yelapa.

We spent a lot of time in the pools and the beach, hitting up the Malecon a few times, too. Along the Malecon, you can hopefully catch a performance of the Dance of the Valadores. This is one of those neat things you can see only in Mexico – and only in certain parts of Mexico.

Huatulco

Las Brisas resort in Santa Maria Huatulco.

Huatulco is located in Oaxaca, Mexico. Again, it’s one of those destinations that isn’t as well traveled by international tourists. Also, you could definitely spend your entire trip hanging around at the beach. We stated at an all-inclusive resort in Huatulco and the photo above overlooks one of the resort’s beaches that located in a protected little cove. Though all beaches in Mexico are public, this one is only accessible by boat unless you are staying at the resort. This beach was our favorite at the resort.

We visited Huatulco in August and it was hot and humid. That’s great for swimming and hanging around the beach, but it was difficult to do all the climbing and walking required at the resort. It was an active vacation! Additionally, you can explore the town of Huatulco, hit up some ruins, or some of the many local beaches.

Queretaro

The Queretaro Aqueduct – including the viewing area and the vendors across the street from the viewing area.

Santiago de Queretaro is located in the state of Queretaro, in the middle of the country. Central Mexico doesn’t get a huge amount of tourist love, which is a shame, really. Queretaro is an awesome city with nearly perfect weather year round. In the city of Queretaro, you can see a pyramid, the Queretaro aqueduct, and walk around centro buying really cool things created by local artisans.

From the city, you can check out amazing places like Pena de Bernal, Tequisquiapan, as well as many other cool things. Santiago de Queretaro is a great base for taking some great day trips, too.

Cabo San Lucas

Los Arcos in Cabo.

Cabo is known for its nightlife and it certainly delivers, at least at the resort where we stayed. It’s definitely worth visiting for those who aren’t traveling with kids and teens, but Cabo San Lucas still has a lot to offer families.

We took a trip on the Yellow Submarine, which was a glass bottom boat tour that took us out to the famous Los Arcos. This was a highlight of our trip for us and the kids. It’s a gorgeous spot.

We spent a lot of time swimming in our resort’s giant pools and less time on the beach. Though our resort was on a beautiful beach, the water was a little rough and got deep quickly. That area was too much for our kids. However, if you are in town and walk around the marina to the beach area, the water is much calmer.

There are so many things to do in Cabo San Lucas and it’s a great place for families to visit.

Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico

What, TEQUILA on a list for families? Sure thing! Tequila is a charming town that just happens to also have several options for tequila tasting tours. We stayed at the barrel hotel (so cute), so we did our tequila tour there with the kids. We got to taste agave mash, as well as learn about the process of growing agave and turning it into tequila.

The town itself is a charming Mexican town, though the tequila distilleries do set it apart. You’ll find lots of vendors, wonderful food, and cute little hotels. Within the town, you probably don’t need to rent a car. However, if you stay at La Cofradia, a car will be helpful for getting to and from the town.

I found Tequila to be a beautiful, fun place and worth a visit. You can take one of the tequila trains from Guadalajara, but a weekend trip from there or Puerto Vallarta is also worth it.

What Are Your Favorite Places to Visit, Mexico?

I enjoyed my visits to all of the places listed here. Our kids ranged in age from 4 and 5 to 8 and 9 during these trips, so your mileage may vary. I hope you come to Mexico with your kids. There’s so much to do and see!
