We visited the Las Brisas Huatulco in the month of August. It was incredibly hot and humid. However, heat is what I want when I’m on a beach vacation. Before booking the Las Brisas Resort, I did do quite a bit of review reading for it and other resorts. Ultimately, what cemented my choice to stay there was a map. The beaches for the resort are in a cove, of sorts, and looked quite protected. Read: calm enough for the kids to enjoy properly.

After our Cabo San Lucas trip earlier this year, where the beach hadn’t been what I’d hoped and expected, I was looking for a great beach experience for the family.

Did the beach deliver? What was Las Brisas Resort like for the kids? Did we like it?

Yes, the beach delivered and we liked the resort! Read on for the full unsponsored review  of this Huatulco all inclusive resort (as always, we paid our own way to visit this resort).

About the hotel and rooms

Las Brisas Huatulco is an older resort. It was built in 1986, originally a Club Med. It was last remodeled in 2015. Overall, I found it clean and functional. Our room was the basic room and it was bigger than I’d expected and it also had a private balcony. It was a great size for a family of four. The only downside was that one of the beds was pretty close to both the bathroom door and the closet door. My husband ran into the bed frame several times.

Check-In

We did have a little trouble with our check-in. The resort did not have our reservation marked as all-inclusive. I’d made sure that food would be included, because the hotel isn’t that close to the town. Our paperwork did say that all meals were included but even so, they made us wait for 45 minutes before finally allowing us to check in. We were hungry and sweating from the heat and humidity and weren’t particularly happy about the treatment. I felt that our paperwork should’ve been enough for us to receive our room and bracelets and the resort should’ve then taken up the issue with the company through which I’d made the reservation.

Luckily, our check-in was really the only problem we had with the resort. I feel comfortable recommending Las Brisas Huatulco to others. If you want the all inclusive option, make sure to check that you’ve selected the correct option before paying.

Stairs and a ramp, heading down to the blue building (home of the main buffet restaurant).

Las Brisas is a large, hilly resort

We took a small shuttle to our room. Shuttles are very much a part of life at this resort because it’s so large and all of the rooms are up at the top of the hills. When we arrived, we wanted to eat and swim. I’d told the kids we needed to have dinner first.

We checked out the map and decided to check out the Mexican restaurant, because I always love Mexican food. However, it was only 5:30 pm when we found the restaurant and it wasn’t open yet. We had no idea where any of the other food options were located, so we did end up swimming from the beach straight out from that restaurant. It was refreshing!

We happened to be vacationing with friends, but they’d had an earlier flight. We saw them as they arrived at the Mexican restaurant for dinner only to find out that at dinner time, it was reservation only. Plus, we needed to be dry.

We climbed back up to our room, changed, and requested a shuttle to take us to food. That was my actual request – we needed food and I needed help finding the regular buffet. It’s on the second floor of the blue building, by the way! It’s actually easy to find after you’ve figured out the lay of the land a bit. The way the roads are laid out make it seem difficult to find anything. However, there are some long staircases that take you down to a flat section, near the ocean. From there, you can find the restaurants, pools, beaches, and lobby much easier.

Food options at Las Brisas

The food at Las Brisas is quite good. While we mostly stuck to the buffet, we did make reservations at the Mexican restaurant on premises one night. This was my first time actually eating at one of the themed restaurants at an all-inclusive resort! They provided us with a menu and our options included one appetizer, one meal, and one dessert. Every single thing we tried was fantastic!

The regular buffet restaurant (located in the blue building) also had great options daily.

Overall, I felt that the food at Las Brisas was some of the best (along with the Royal Haciendas in Playa Del Carmen). The only downside is that I had no idea what was gluten free and what wasn’t. I didn’t ask much about food allergies and took my chances.

Little Angels Club (Kids Club)

Activities for the kids start at 10 am and end at 9 pm. There are breaks for lunch and dinner. Some of the options included board games, movie time, crafts, swimming/pool games, yoga, and karaoke. There were also morning walks to various locations in the resort several days per week.

This resort feels huge. It doesn’t feel crowded. The downside is that it involves a lot of walking. The kids club is on the far side of the resort. The lobby was at the halfway point between our room and the kids club. However, we didn’t let that stop us from letting our kids go and hang out. It’s a cute little open-air building, with two closed rooms on each side that do have air-conditioning. The activities changed daily.

We got into a routine that we’d take the kids after lunch so they could participate for a few hours in the afternoon. They loved it and would’ve have stayed all day if we have let them. I appreciate the kids clubs at resorts because my kids enjoy them immensely. We did limit their time in the kids clubs a bit during this trip for a few reasons. First, we were vacationing with another family, so we spent the mornings at the beach with them. Second, we do like to spend some time with our kids, too. Third, the walk to go check on them was long. We’d let them stay for 2-3 hours and then would pick them up.

My children did love the kids club and encouraged our friend’s children to join them. Everyone had a blast!

The Beaches

This resort has three beaches. In Mexico, all beaches are public. However, the beaches at this resort were not easily accessible. In fact, the only way to get there if you aren’t staying at the resort is by boat! There were only two entrepreneurs who swam up to the shore to sell their wares during our visit. Sometimes, many people are hanging out on the beach by the hotels and resorts, hoping for a sale. This is awesome for the convenience of purchasing cool things, though it can also get frustrating if you just want to go for a swim.

One of the coolest aspects of the beaches as Las Brisas is that since they weren’t crowded, it felt like we had the beach to ourselves. It felt this way even when the beach was crowded. There was enough space at the beaches and the resort in general that we never felt crowded.

Our favorite beach was nestled in a cove which gave it protection from rougher waves. Additionally, it was protected by a reef! We did have about a half a day where they’d posted the black flag (for dangerous swimming conditions). Overall, it was an incredibly lovely beach with awesome conditions. There were a lot of fish hanging around, too. A stingray even swam around me during our last swim before checking out!

Please note: We saw people feeding the fish more than once. It isn’t allowed. There are lifeguards at the snorkel building who give people a warning whistle for feeding the fish or swimming too close to the reef during low tide. Also, please wear coral reef safe sunscreen here and anytime you’ll be enjoying the beach.

The Pools

While the beaches and resort in general didn’t feel busy, the pools did! There was one main pool and it had a weird design. The largest section was around 6 feet deep. It also didn’t have a ledge of any kind. All of the families were mostly confined to the smaller section of the pool, which had steps and a ledge at least part way around it. In the middle, it was over our kids’ heads.

We spent one afternoon in the pool and that was enough for me. It was a bit crowded. However, even worse, the pool water felt so hot!

Additionally, there was a separate adults only pool and a shallow pool for children near this main area. There was another shallow pool for kids in front of the Little Angels Club building.

Mobility

We had to do a lot of walking, as well as tackling hills and stairs. The shuttles can go quite a lot of places. There are ramps to get up and down at the restaurants and the lobby. There are no elevators. Our friends traveled with three generations and the grandparents of the crew got around reasonably well, using the shuttle service to get to and from their room.

Do I recommend Las Brisas to families?

Yes, I do recommend this resort for families. It was perfect for my kids at ages 6 and 7. However, it would’ve probably not been as great for us if they were 4 and younger. This is because it was a little scary (for me, the mom) to ride on the shuttles while hanging on to the kids. We also climbed up and down the hills several times daily. It was easier than waiting for a shuttle every time we were on the move. Even active kids are going to get tired of climbing.

Our vacation was wonderful and that’s due in part to how physically active we were!
