On a long weekend in November, we decided to visit Xilitla, San Luis Potosi, Mexico from our home base (please note, it is correctly written as Xilitla, San Luis Potosí). Little did we know that to get to Xilitla, we had to drive through the incredible Sierra Gorda Mountains. Due to a section of the highway that was only a dirt road*, we almost turned around. I’m so glad that we didn’t!

When my friend asked if we wanted to visit the Santa Brigida Mine in Mineral de Pozos, Guanajuato, Mexico, I said yes! Two hours later, we were on our way. This day trip, which is only around one and half hours from Queretaro, Mexico, is fun visit to one of Mexico’s Pueblo Mágicos (magical town or village). The town itself is adorable, clean and has lovely cafes and shops. But what about the Santa Brigida? Is it worth visiting?
When I learned about Las Siete Luminarias in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico, I only knew one of the seven craters was a tourist attraction. I did not know if any other were accessible. As we arrived at our second crater visit, Crater La Alberca, my husband turned to me and said, “Please don’t make it a goal to visit all seven craters.”
“Instead of climbing over the mountain, they blasted a tunnel right through it, but they didn’t run electricity,” our friend told us about Las Siete Luminarias. Bring flashlights stuck in mind.
One place that I really wanted to visit ever since learning of its existence was Las Siete Luminarias. The best known is called El Rincón de Parangueo. This is located near Valle de Santiago, Guanajuato, Mexico.
This begs the question, what are Las Siete Luminarias or Seven Luminaries?
Ever heard of the Peña de Bernal in San Sebastian Bernal? ? I hadn’t! I didn’t even know exactly what we were doing. Was it a crater? A mountain hike? Or some other natural phenomenon? Mexico is full of natural wonders and the Peña de Bernal, located in Bernal, Queretaro, Mexico is one of them.
Technology keeps us closer than ever before. Also, let’s be candid. I doubt I would have considered the move from the US to Mexico if we didn’t have the technology we have available today. In the short time we’ve been here, I’ve missed my grandmother’s 100th birthday party, my Aunt and Uncle’s 50th Wedding Anniversary party, and several immediate family gatherings. You know, the usual when you choose to travel long-term or move far from family.
But technology helps!

We drove to Guadalajara from our home in Central Mexico. It served as our day one stopping point between our town and Puerto Vallarta. My husband’s coworker is from there, offered to show us around, and take us to Michin Aquarium (Acuario Michin). It was an offer we knew we had to take! We booked the hotel he recommended, which was in the centro. Finding it took an hour and involved getting stopped by the police… Let’s talk about exploring Michin Aquarium in Guadalajara, Mexico!
