Itinerary for an Awesome Yucatan Peninsula Road Trip with Kids

For Spring Break, we decided to fly to Cancun, Mexico. My husband originally wanted to  go to an all-inclusive resort. I checked the prices and they seemed really high (spoiler alert: many all-inclusive resorts in Cancun are actually reasonably priced because the restaurants in Cancun are very expensive).  I started trying to figure out an option that was better for the budget AND included seeing Chichen Itza. We decided to take a sightseeing road trip around the Yucatan Peninsula, which included spending a lot of time in Tulum.

That all being said, this is NOT a budget trip. Though in the end, it was pretty close to equal the cost of staying in an all-inclusive resort with one or two excursions for four. I am, however, extremely satisfied with the flexibility our choices offered us during the trip.

Well, I was satisfied once I got over feeling guilty about blowing our travel budget, of course.

This is Why I Suffer From Decision Fatigue While Family Trip Planning

Do you suffer from decision fatigue while family trip planning? I certainly do. In fact, I have a full on case of it right now! A lot of it is caused by having to plan a great trip for four different people, with different personalities. That’s right, it’s time to plan a family trip! Spring break, to be specific.

During one of the most expensive times of the year, I need to plan a kid friendly vacation. Yikes! How do you plan your vacations for kids? Where do you get your family vacation ideas?

A Quick Guide to Beachy Good Times in Ixtapa

“I have two weekdays off in early December,” my husband informed me. After making him triple quadruple check this with multiple people, we decided to go to Ixtapa. Ixtapa is a beach destination in Mexico that many expats and locals recommended. We decided that four days there would be enough time to get a good taste of the beach and would be worth the 5-6 hour drive.

“Wait, we leave for the US 4 days later,” I said to my husband. “That’s just crazy.”

“Let’s do it,” he said. I am so glad that we did!

This is How We Accidentally Got to See Baby Sea Turtles

“You should see the baby sea turtles while you visit Ixtapa. It was on my bucket list and it was the first thing we did when we got there,” my friend gushed.

After she told me the price, I was deterred. It would cost a few hundred dollars to do the same sea turtle release event in which she and her family participated. My husband and I talked about it and decided that we’d wait another year. That way, our kids would be another year older and hopefully, they would better remember the incredible thing we’d be doing.

I put the baby sea turtles out of my mind for another year.

San Francisco and the Virus from Hell

The sand was warm beneath my bare and cold feet. It was a beach and my shoes had to be off! The view: The Golden Gate Bridge. Iconic. It was an amazing landmark to see in person. I hadn’t expected it to be so chilly in June. Inland, it would be at least 10 degrees warmer. The virus had pretty much run its course by then, leaving me tired and weak. I wanted to have wonderful stories from San Francisco. Instead, it was a whirlwind of sightseeing and ibuprofen. Continue reading

This is Vermilion: How to have an Awesome Vacation

“We have to go back. I forgot something,” I said, as we were pulling out of our driveway, toward Vermilion.

To his credit, my husband didn’t sigh or roll his eyes. He just turned the care around. Our destination was a small town on Lake Erie, only about 2 hours away. Vermilion, Ohio is a great little place . In fact, the town motto is “A Small Town on a Great Lake” and it’s true! It’s small, quaint, and adorable. Oh, there’s also a beach!

A beach vacation in Ohio?!

Yep!
